Geography
Curriculum Intent
At St. George’s CE Primary School our intent is to provide a Geography curriculum that is designed to develop children’s curiosity and fascination about the natural and human aspects of the world. Our curriculum is underpinned by our Christian vision, promoting compassion and a deep sense of responsibility for the world and its people.
Teaching and learning in Geography at St. George’s is creative, stimulating and inspiring for pupils. It is our intention that Geography will promote children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development helping them to have a greater understanding of the world in which they live; their place within it and ‘life in all its fullness’ (John 10:10).
We are committed to providing children with opportunities to explore a diverse range of places both in the United Kingdom and abroad to help deepen their understanding of the Earth’s physical and human processes. We will motivate children to ask questions about the world and provide them with opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge in order to communicate their geographical understanding to a range of audiences.
Through an enquiry-based approach, our geography curriculum aims to inspire awe and wonder about the world God has created, encouraging pupils to think critically, ask questions, and engage with the world around them. By focusing on global and local scales, we aim to develop children's understanding of diverse places, people, resources, and natural and human environments.
Curiosity and Critical Thinking
We aim to nurture curiosity about the world by posing questions and engaging pupils in meaningful investigations. Each unit begins with an enquiry question, encouraging pupils to explore geographical concepts through observation, research, and critical thinking. This approach allows children to lead their learning, fostering independence and resilience.
Deepen Understanding of God’s Creation
In line with our Christian vision, our geography curriculum encourages pupils to appreciate the beauty, complexity, and diversity of God’s creation. We integrate our Christian values, helping pupils understand their role as caretakers of the earth. Through this, we aim to develop a sense of responsibility for caring for the environment and the people within it.
Promote Local and Global Awareness
Our curriculum promotes an understanding of both the local community and the wider world. Pupils will explore the geography of our local area, learning about the physical and human features that make it unique. This focus includes investigations into contrasting global locations, helping children develop empathy and a sense of interconnectedness with people and cultures around the world.
Develop Geographical Skills and Knowledge
We aim to equip children with the skills and knowledge needed to investigate geographical issues effectively. Through map reading, fieldwork, and data analysis, pupils will develop a range of skills that enable them to understand geographical processes. This is underpinned by a secure knowledge of key geographical vocabulary and concepts, ensuring children can communicate their ideas clearly and confidently.
Foster a Sense of Global Responsibility
Rooted in our Christian vision, we want pupils to leave St. George’s with a strong sense of moral and social responsibility. By exploring challenges such as climate change and sustainability, we encourage children to think deeply about how they can contribute to a better world. Our enquiry-based approach allows pupils to consider how they can take positive action in response to these challenges, both locally and globally.
Implementation and Impact:
- Lessons will be designed to encourage pupils to work collaboratively, think critically, and reflect on their learning, with the enquiry question driving each unit.
- Cross-curricular links with subjects such as history, science, and religious education will be made to deepen pupils' understanding and to foster a holistic view of the world.
By embedding our Christian vision into an enquiry-led geography curriculum, we aim to shape responsible, informed, and compassionate citizens who are inspired to love and care for God's creation.
