Important information
PE
PE takes place every Monday and Thursday. Please ensure children arrive to school in suitable kit and shoes.
Reading
Please read with your child daily and ensure book bags come into school everyday.
Phonics
At St George’s, we teach phonics and reading using the ‘Little Wandle Letters and Sounds’ scheme.
Children start to learn phonics from week 2 in Reception. Teaching continues through the whole of Year 1 and the first term in Year 2. After this, the children move on to learning spelling patterns whilst revisiting phonic teaching. We teach GPCs (Grapheme Phoneme Correspondences) following a progressive overview.
In addition to the daily phonic lessons, we have 3 reading sessions every week. The books that the children read are closely aligned to their phonic ability and are changed every Thursday. In addition to this book, your child will bring home a book from our interest baskets. These books are labelled a ‘book to share’. This book might be too easy or difficult for your child, but it is intended for you as parents or carers to read to your child, to ignite a love of reading.
Some children who are finding aspects of the scheme difficult will receive keep up sessions. The children are assessed every 6 weeks (every 3 weeks if receiving keep up support) to ensure they are on track.

Phonics bloom have some fun games you can play at home:
Books are changed every Thursday. Please make sure that books are in your child's bag every day. The children will bring a book home that is phonologically decodable ('A book I can read') and a book from our interest baskets ('A book to share'). The 'book I can read' is to be read throughout the week. Research has shown that repetition is a key factor to learning to read fluently. Please try to listen to your child reading this book as often as possible. The book to share will be purely based on interest. It may be too difficult or too easy for your child to read, however it is purely to help develop a love of reading and to instil 'reading for pleasure'.
