Science

Curriculum Intent

At St George’s CE Primary School, we believe science is an essential part of children’s development in order to live ‘life in all its fullness’. Science helps children to understand the world around them, ask questions, and develop the skills needed to explore and make sense of their environment.

Through the teaching and learning of science, we aim to deliver a curriculum that enables all children to Believe, Belong and Flourish.

Believe: we want every child to see themselves as a scientist. Our science curriculum encourages curiosity, questioning, and exploration through practical, hands-on experiences. Children are supported to develop confidence, resilience, and independence as they investigate scientific ideas and learn from mistakes. Through working scientifically, pupils are encouraged to believe in their ability to think critically, solve problems, and make discoveries about the world around them.

Belong: science is for everyone. At St George’s, every child is entitled to high-quality science teaching that is engaging, inclusive, and carefully sequenced in line with the National Curriculum. Our curriculum develops both substantive knowledge (scientific concepts and understanding) and disciplinary knowledge (working scientifically skills) through the disciplines of biology, chemistry, and physics. Children work collaboratively, share ideas respectfully, and understand that their contributions are valued within a supportive learning environment. By exploring big questions and a range of scientific enquiries, pupils develop a sense of connection to the world and responsibility for caring for it.

Flourish: we strive for all children to flourish in science by developing a secure understanding of scientific knowledge and the ability to apply it in meaningful ways. Pupils are given opportunities to investigate, observe, classify, research, and interpret results using a range of methods, including diagrams, charts, graphs, and ICT. Through rich scientific experiences, children develop important life skills such as problem solving, teamwork, resilience, and respect for the world around them. This equips them to flourish not only in their future education, but also as informed and responsible citizens in an ever-changing world.

Our aim is to ensure every child leaves St George’s with a strong understanding of science and the confidence to question, investigate, and explore the world around them, preparing them for the opportunities and challenges of the future.
