Phonics and Early Readers
At St. George's we use the Little Wandle phonics scheme for teaching phonics and early reading skills. This supports our ethos of Believe, Belong and Flourish by building pupils’ confidence and belief in themselves as successful readers, creating a supportive environment where every child feels they belong, and giving all pupils the skills they need to flourish academically and personally. This starts within the first few weeks of the children starting in Reception and follows through Year 1 into the start of Year 2. The children receive a daily phonics session where they will learn new sounds and revisit previous sounds as a reminder. They will practise letter formation alongside this. The children also have three reading sessions a week where they work in a small group with a trained practitioner to read a book which is matched to their level of learning. These sessions are aimed at increasing fluency, practising prosody (reading with expression) and building comprehension. At the end of these three sessions in school, the children will bring home the book to share.
A video of outlining the teaching is available here and a presentation is available here.
